Tubulicid
During cavity preparation, a thin so-called "smear layer", grinding debris, is formed, which adheres to the prepared surface.

It is important to remove most of this smear layer and to treat the dental surface with cleaning solution. Cleaning the surfaces also improves retention of the liner film or cement.

Tubulicid removes smear layer without opening the dentinal tubules (see fig 1).

Note: Many "primers" and "cleaners" contain acids or high conc. of EDTA. These agents should not be applied to cavities with sensible dentin. The dentinal tubules may be opened an widened, with great risk to the pulp through increased permeability. This in turn creates the practical problem of drying the cavity when the dentinal tubules are patent.

speed and a diamond cylinder

removed, the peritubular dentin
intact and amorphous material remains in the tubule aperatures.

TUBULICID BLUE is used for cleaning lager surface areas, for example before cementing crowns and bridges.
TUBULICID RED should be used for cleaning cavities and distribution of fluorine to enamel and dentin, for example in the treatment of hypersensitive cervical dentin.

Tubulicid Red contains 1,0% Sodium Fluoride and must not be swallowed by the patient.

Some clinical applications for TUBULICID

Excavating caries
Place a drop of TUBULICID in the cavity and remove soft dentin with a handinstrument or a round, low speed burr without water coolant.

Deep cavities and uncertain pulpal diagnosis:

  1. Cleanse with TUBULICID, rub the surface for a few seconds, allow the solution to remain for a further 30-60 seconds and then apply a quick spray of water.
  2. Apply air blast from different directions for 10 seconds.
  3. Re-applay TUBULICID RED for distribution of fluorine to the dentinal surface.
  4. Apply Ca(OH)2, DT TEMPORARY DRESSING, to the surfaces. Cover with a temporary filling of eg IRM.

For temporary and permanent cementation of inlays, crowns and bridges:

Before temporary cementation the smear layer should always be removed with TUBULICID RED. The dentinal surfaces under temporary crowns should be protected from leakage by both Tubulitec Primer and Liner.
The insulating layer is removed before permanent cementation. Use a mixture of pumice and TUBULICID in slowly rotating rubber cup or brush.

Root canals prepared for post retention:

  1. Apply pellet soaked in TUBULICID to the base of the canal before temporary cementation. This also avoids cement at the bottom of the canal.
    Before permanent cementation:
  2. Brush the canal with TUBULICID and pumice. Use an inter-dental brush mounted on a mandrel without its screw. This is easily done with composite resin (Fig 2).
  3. Using a syringe, rinse the canal with water.
  4. Dry with a stream of compressed air at right angles to the canal opening and with a paper point in the canal.

Fig 2. A prepared root canal which has had a temporary post cemented and then cleaned as described above.

Clean surface, patent dentinal tubules (allowable before permanent cementation)
and a small scratches from pumice.
